Olympus, a race against time, a new musical, will be performed at the Ashcroft Theatre, Fairfield Halls, Croydon, from Wednesday 9th – Saturday 12th of May 2012 and, the following week, Thursday 17th – Saturday 19th May at the Minack Theatre, Cornwall to coincide with the Olympic Torch relay leaving Land’s End. Written by two Croydon residents, Ian Rae and Chris Chambers, it is being presented as a community project in the run up to the Olympic Games.
A number of Croydon College Performing Arts students who are participating in the creation of a brand new musical will be giving valuable feedback about the viability of the script. These Media Studies students are videoing workshops, rehearsals and performances as well as creating a viral animation to help market the show. In addition, the students are studying the period of the Ancient Olympics and the Olympic Ideal as part of their curriculum. They will be blogging and using social media to record their involvement with the show and will write an assessment of the experience at its conclusion that will be posted on this website. Rehearsals are already under way as you can see here.
The students will definitely be performing in Croydon but, in order to take them to the Minack, we will have to obtain funding through sponsorship. The students mostly come from disadvantaged backgrounds and would be unable to fund themselves to take part in this exciting opportunity. It will cost approximately £250 per student – to include accommodation, travel and food and plus the £45 show fee that other participants will pay.
You can help us to fund these Croydon students in three ways:
1. Come to Show Songs and Tea, hosted by Christina and John Preston, at 10 Manor Way, South Croydon, CR2 7BQ between 1500 – 1800: Saturday 10th March or 14th April, and bring your friends. Morven and Ian Rae and some of the young people will sing songs from the show during tea. All donations in return for tea, cake and songs will go into the fund. (If you did not get tickets to the Olympics games here is an even better option!)
RSVP firstname.lastname@example.org or 020 8686 8769
2. Buy tickets for the shows at our discounted prices of £10 – and bring friends. There will be a party after the show on Friday 11th May. Phone Morven Rae: 020 8660 6910.
3. Sponsor this community initiative by going to the Sponsume website and search under ‘projects’ for ‘Olympus’.
