Grapes in Jacobsdal
Several types of farming have been introduced to black-small
farmers around Jacobsdal after the first democratic elections.
Do you remember them?
Case study
The Cape region of South Africa has a Mediterranean type of
climate (it rains in the winter). There is plenty of sandy
soil, cold weather and a lot of sun-shine. Technology experts
had found that these conditions were ideal for the farming
of grapes-vines and the production of wine. South African
wines are rated amongst the best in the world as well as the
by-products of wine such as certain brandies and wine juices.
Few years ago, farmers around Jacobsdal fed their families
from seeds of different plants which were thrown by hand onto
unprepared ground. It did not take them long to realize that
this method had to be improved. Farmers then talked and acquired
tools or implements from ‘Westra Co-0perartion’
in Moddedriver to prepare the ground.
Wine-farming is a recently introduced type of farming around
Jacobsdal which adds TASTE to the Free State .
As technology improves, problems were overcome where machines
that can plough up to ten furrows at a time in a speedy way
were put in use. More productive fruits like Grapes were introduced
in the agricultural field of Jacobsdal in the recent 10 years
of democracy in South Africa
As years passed, newer and more advanced technological break-through
for more varieties and cultivars were brought in. Machines
are now implemented and operators are trained to use them.
Animals are no more used to cut furrows in the ground...

In a small group, list as many factors that you think GRAPE
FARMING has affected Jacobsdal …
(i) Positively as well as
(ii) Negatively within the 10 years of democracy.
Think about the natural and the social environment.
- Compare your answers with those of another group.
Do you agree with their answers?

Think about
In the olden days how did…
- people get the seeds and skin from the grapes?
- they finally extract the juice from the grapes?
Why is this method no longer appropriate?

Conclusion
The Wine Cellar named ‘Landzicht’ in Jacobsdal
is in good progress in exporting fine and new brands of wines.
The employment rate is increasing gradually as many people
from the communities we live in get job opportunities. On
the other hand this eventually puts the Free State in the
fore front of a major wine producer of the world. The arms
of the NEPAD initiation is stretched and strengthened.
Haak Vrystaat! Proudly SOUTH AFRICAN
