Growing grapesThe Growing Process of Grapes

Natural Science lesson plan from Vanita Coetzee, Ikanyegeng School

Critical Outcome 1:

  • COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY USING VISUAL MATHEMATICAL AND/OR LANGUAGE SKILLS IN THE MODE OF ORAL AND/OR WRITTEN RESENTATIONS

Critical Outcome 2:

  • IDENTIFY AND SOLVE PROBLEMS BY USING CREATIVE AND CRITICAL THINKING

Specific Outcome:

  • DEMONSTRATE AN UNDERSTANDING OF HOW SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS CONTRIBUTE TO THE MANAGEMENT, DEVELOPMENT AND UTILISATION OF NATURAL AND OTHER RESOURCES.

AT THE END OF THE LESSON LEARNERS MUST BE ABLE TO:

  • Name the properties of sand and clay soil.
  • Develop an experiment to determine what type of soil a given sample is.
  • Communicate their experiments by means of a pamphlet.

The Growing Process of Grapes: Soil Fertility

Lesson Plan

Soil for grapes:
   What is soil?
   Influence on wine quality
   Types of soil:
       Sand, Clay

SOILS FOR GRAPES

Soil consists of:

  • Weathered particles that together with:
    • organic matter
    • water
    • air
  • Provides a medium in which plants can grow

Vines are able to adapt themselves to a very wide range of soil types.

INFLUENCE OF SOIL TYPES ON WINE QUALITY

The influence of specific soil types on the quality of the wine is disputed.

  • FRANCE Attributes great value to lime content
  • ITALY No special value to lime content
  • GERMANY Attributes great value to slate-stone

The finest fruits are often cultivated where the soil composition is large, grained and well drained.

Vineyard

Grapevines generally produce their finest fruits in calcareous, or slate soils. Local vineyard farmers attribute great importance to the lime content of their soil.

TYPES OF SOIL

1. SANDY SOIL

  • is well aerated
  • easy to cultivate
  • well drained
  • is a warm soil
  • has low water retaining capacity

2. CLAY SOIL

  • usually drains slowly
  • ap to become waterlogged
  • difficult to cultivate
  • reains water and plant nutrients well

TABLE OF PROPERTIES

DEGREE IN WHICH SOIL CONTENT CONCERNED EXHIBITS THE PROPERTY
PHYSICAL PROPERTY SAND CLAY
WATER CAPACITY VERY LOW VERY HIGH
RATE OF WATER MOVEMENT VERY FAST VERY SLOW
ABSORPTION CAPACITY VERY SLIGHT VERY HIGH
RELATIVE TEMPERATURE WARM VERY COLD
AERATION VERY GOOD VERY POOR

Assessment

Previously a lot of farmers did not take into consideration the type of soil when they decide to plant vineyards. Nowadays farming is seen as both a science and a business.

Vineyard

The local farmers cannot afford to send away soil samples for analyses as it is very expensive.

You are appointed as a consultant by the local co-operation.

Your main task is to help the new upcoming farmers.

Use Microsoft Publisher to design a pamphlet (including text and images) which includes possible experiments, that the farmers can conduct themselves, to help the farmer decide if the ground on his farm is suitable for planting vineyards.

CONCLUSION

  • 10 Years after democracy more people has the privilege to own their own land.
  • With each privilege goes together a responsibility.
  • Farmers have to run their farms according to their business plans in order to make it sustainable.
  • In order to develop their natural resources, farmers need to apply scientific knowledge and skills when making decisions.
