Siphiwe Grace Phindela
Poems from Voices from the Free State

Siphiwe and friendMy name is Siphiwe Grace Phindela (that's me on the left with my friend); my place of birth is Botshabelo in Bloemfontein. I am just completing Grade 12 – Matric - at St Bernard’s High school. I enjoy playing volleyball, watching TV, reading and writing. I am a member of the Methodist church.

In life I have learnt that challenges lead to a better future and that life is too short to live with regrets. My motto in life is to live for today, learn from yesterday's mistakes and dream for tomorrow.

Poetry has changed my life completely. I enjoy life to the fullest because I can express my feelings through poetry.

These poems are from the collection Voices from the Free State, published earlier in 2004. The first poem is about the death of my father, ‘I am only a woman’ shows the many roles women can play in South Africa – and ‘I am the man’ is, of course, about Nelson Mandela.

What A Broken Heart?

I felt all alone
Because I was lost
I couldn't sleep at night
Waiting for you to come back.
I feel changed in my life
'Cause I will never see you again.
Life is so desolate
'Cause I will never see you again
I thought life was over!
But it was just the beginning
of an endless longing.
Just when I needed you most
You were gone
You were my world, my hero
my everything
But I am lost forever
I will never forget you, father
Because your are the king of my heart.

I Am Only A Woman

I am only a woman
I am the woman
I am the weapon
I am the soldier
I am the teacher
I am the role model
I am the world's greatest

My love is a warm blanket
My life the source of intelligence
Challenges are my life's teachers
Obstacles are my middle name
Because I am a woman!

I am like the yellow colour
That symbolizes the bright future
I am like the white colour
That symbolizes peace
I am like the red colour
That symbolises love
I am only a woman
I can give you anything

I Am The Man

Robben Island was my home
Because I was fighting for peace
I was struggling alone in a dark room
Because I had to fight for freedom
Imagine twenty-seven years in chains!
But I never gave up I was determined
To set my country free.

Because I am a man who strived for freedom
I never gave up on my ambition
Imagine having a visitor once a year

Then came 1994
The year of peace and freedom
I am the man
Because blacks and whites are together

I am the man
Dark days are gone.
I am the man
I gave my life to our people
I am the man
South Africans are together
As brothers and sisters.
I am the man
Because I had brought peace to our
South Africans!
