Tom Rank's Guide to some UK websites
These sites are, inevitably, UK-based and hence not all the
resources will be relevant. However, the advice is based on
experience that should be valuable to South Africa (we’d
like you to avoid some of our mistakes!) and resources could
be adapted or even just used as they are.
Becta: ICT Advice www.ictadvice.org.uk
Official site offering support to UK schools; much useful
information. Avoids recommending individual products, so some
advice can seem rather general. The ‘technology’
section of the site offers a useful overview of presentation
technologies (whiteboards, etc), networking and many other
aspects. Free.
Teacher Resource Exchange - http://tre.ngfl.gov.uk
A ‘database of resources and activities designed to
help teachers develop and share ideas for good practice’
- organised by and designed for the UK curriculum but worth
browsing for materials, eg for whiteboards. See, as an example,
‘PowerPoint in Secondary English’ by Judith Kneen
for some good ideas for secondary teaching. Free – no
need to register.
NATE www.nate.org.uk
National Association for the Teaching of English – independent
professional organisation for teachers, advisers, lecturers
in education, etc. Not a great deal on ICT on the site, but
they publish and/or sell some useful books (such as the two
mentioned in this report) and organise courses.
Actis www.actis.co.uk
For online resources for primary and secondary schools –
www.primaryonline.co.uk, www.englishonline.co.uk, etc. These
are directed at the UK market but the whiteboard tools (Primary
Online) and WordLab (English Online) have much potential.
Whiteboard tools available on CD – the current cost
seems to be £40 upwards but we are investigating cost
to South African schools. I shall attempt in any case to send
my own copy to St Bernard’s if I can.
Subscription services, but the following details will give
access to 20 November 2004:
User ID: Lapa
Password: MirandaNet04
Please note that the ID and password are case-sensitive.
For the whiteboard tools, go either to Primary Online –>
Teachers’ page or to Maths Online –> Resource
centre. The CD contains most of the primary whiteboard tools.
Active Maths www.active-maths.co.uk
A range of easy-to-use activities similar to the Actis products.
Available online and on CD.
Temporary access has been set up for South Africa:
Click on 'Whiteboard Worksheets', choose
a topic from the drop-down list, then the one you'd like to
try. There's a 'password' box near the top - type in:
freeby2
The box should go away.
You need a different password for the Active Worksheets
(not available on CD). Select the unit as above, then type
in
freda
in the box. (The password box is not shown when you print)
